Overnight closure ahead for stretch of HB Expressway maintenance

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 15 Aug 2025 11:32am | Hawke’s Bay

A stretch of State Highway 2 Hawke’s Bay Expressway will be closed overnight next Sunday (24 August) for routine maintenance.

The road will be closed between the Pākōwhai/Links Road and Evenden Road roundabouts from 8pm until 5am.

A detour, suitable for all vehicles, will be in place. Northbound traffic will be detoured onto Evenden Road then Pākōwhai Road. The reverse will apply for southbound traffic.

The detour is expected to add up to 5 minutes to journey times.

Crews will carry out a raft of maintenance during the closure, including flexible median barrier repairs. This is part of the monthly maintenance schedule.

At this stage, the following dates have been confirmed for the remainder of the year:

  • 28 September
  • No October closure at this stage
  • 2 November
  • 7 December

While these dates are confirmed, the stretch of expressway closed on any date may change at short notice depending on the maintenance priorities at the time.

The dates are also weather dependent and if postponed, the following Sunday will be used as the contingency date.
