Drivers travelling on the State Highway 60 Ruby Bay Bypass in Tasman District can expect to see further works from early May on a 2.7 kilometre section of safety barrier.

Overnight road closures will be needed to complete the work, says NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA).

The overnight closures will start on Sunday, 4 May and go through to Monday, 26 May. The road will be closed between 7pm and 5.30am, Sunday to Thursday.

NZTA Infrastructure Delivery Regional Manager Jetesh Bhula appreciates the further work will create some disruption for the community.

“We thank all road users and residents who will have to use the detour while the overnight closures are in place in May, and for bearing in mind the journey will take slightly longer – around ten minutes - daytimes also.”

Work details:

The work will take place from Sunday, 4 May until Monday, 26 May, with overnight road closures between 7pm and 5.30am, Sunday to Thursday.

  • No overnight closures on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • This work is weather dependent, so dates or times may change.
  • All vehicles will need to use the local road detour via Mapua Drive, Stafford Drive and Aporo Road. People travelling between Motueka and Richmond/Nelson must use this detour while the overnight closures are in place. On the detour route, traffic lights will be in place at a single-lane site at Ruby Bay Cliffs.
  • The detour will add around 10 minutes to travel times.
  • Residents needing to access Gardner Valley Road or Tasman View Road will need to continue to use Dominion Road or Harley Road.
  • Residents needing access to Stagecoach Road and Chaytor Road must use Seaton Valley Road.
  • State Highway 60 will be open in both directions during the day. However, traffic management will be in place, including a temporary lower speed limit. Drivers should plan for delays of around ten minutes during the day and when using the detour overnight.
  • The roadworkers are doing their best to keep everyone safe while this work is completed, so NZTA asks road users to do what they say and stick to the posted temporary speed limits.
