NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) advises State Highway 1 Otaika Road is closed between South End Avenue and Rewa Rewa Road in Whangārei due to a serious crash.

There are detours in place. Northbound traffic travelling to Whangārei should follow the local road detour from Rewa Rewa Road. Northbound through-traffic should turn left onto State Highway 15 (Otaika Valley Road) in Otaika, then right onto State Highway 14 in Maungatapere before rejoining SH1 via Maunu Road in Whangārei. Southbound traffic should take the same route in reverse.

Traffic will be heavier than normal and people are asked to take care. The closure is expected to be in place until at least mid-afternoon to allow the Serious Crash Unit to investigate.

People are advised to check the NZTA Journey Planner website for up-to-date information on the closure before they travel.
