SH6 night-time closures for work on underslip
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 11 Aug 2025 11:19am | Otago
State Highway 6 Kawarau Gorge will be closed overnight (Sunday–Thursday) for eight weeks at Scrubby Corner from later this month as work is carried out to address the effects of an underslip. The site will be opened on the hour during the closure periods (9pm–6am) to allowed queued traffic to pass.
From Sunday 31 August, the highway at this site just north of Goldfield Mining Centre, will close from Sunday to Thursday, from 9pm reopening at 6am the following day. There will be no work or closures during daytime hours, or in the periods from Friday 6am through to Sunday 9pm. This schedule is due to continue until Thursday 23 October.
During these nightly periods of closure, the highway will open every hour, on the hour, and any waiting traffic will be piloted through a single lane at the site. Motorists should prepare for delays of up to an hour when travelling through the area during these closures.
Oversize vehicles or loads will be accommodated as long as they adhere to their permit requirements of notification, so that the crew can coordinate with the operator and assist them through the narrow corridor.
The work being carried out by Aspiring Highways, on behalf of New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, is to remediate the underslip at Scrubby Corner. This requires the pinning back, strengthening and reinforcing of the current crib retaining wall. This will be achieved by boring anchors through the existing retaining wall into rock and structurally connecting those anchors into the existing crib wall.
